Troubleshooting Excel with Cognos

Make sure that your Pop-up Blocker is either turned off, or that you have allowed the Cognos URL

 

Add URL as a trusted site (you may need to uncheck “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone”)

 

If you have "Custom Level.." security defined, ensure that you have enabled "Automatic Prompting for downloads"

Otherwise, you will get a pop-up window, the file will begin to download and it will be prevented by this setting.

 

When viewing in Excel formats, you should get a  dialog box that looks like this:

If you clear the “Always ask before opening this type of file” then the file should open directly in the pop-up browser window and you will not get this dialog box in the future.
